The "Eckertalsperre" is located near Bad Harzburg. (Or also called Eckertalstausee). It is the smallest and the highest dam in the Harz water regulation systems.
The wall of the dam is approx. 235 m long and approx. 60 m high, it withstands a weight of 420,000 t water pressure. The purpose of the system is to supply drinking water to the Wolfsburg and Braunschweig area, to protect against summer and winter floods and to generate energy.
Nicely situated. The border to the former GDR used to go right through here. The Eckertalsperre is a popular hiking destination and tour destination for mountain bikers. Steps lead down to the dam from the street side. I left no wheel up. On the other side of the dam there is the so-called root section. You should leave that to mountain bikers.

Great engineering skills can be seen here and a piece of former inner German division on top of that.

A huge reservoir with a beautiful view of the Brocken. Over the dam wall once ran the inner German border strictly guarded. Fortunately, only the border between the states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt runs there today.

A historical place for the time up to 1989 and a fantastic view of the Brocken anyway ...

One of THE historical places in the Harz! Thankfully, the old border post on the dam has been left and the view of the Brocken is simply fantastic!

The arduous route is worthwhile. A lot of nature and a piece of German history up close!
