At a good 40 meters above sea level and directly on the banks of the Elbe River, a high medieval residential tower, the Klutturm, stands, and right next to it a neo-Gothic castle. These are the remains of the former castle complex and later the Rogätz manor.

The 32-meter-high Klut Tower in the Elbe municipality of Rogätz is the remnant of a castle complex first mentioned in the 12th century. This former high medieval tower house on the high bank of the Elbe River takes its name from Low German.

"Klut" means something like lump or block. The tower was built of large fieldstone and granite stones. In old documents of the owners, it was always referred to simply as "the old tower." People retreated behind its walls, some of which were over two meters thick, in times of danger. During the Thirty Years' War, for example, the castle was fiercely contested.

For almost 500 years, Rogätz Castle was owned by the von Alvensleben family (red line). Between 1369 and 1851, however, the knight's seat had to be mortgaged several times until Maximilian Count von Schwerin – a high-ranking Prussian minister – finally took over the manor. The subsequent owners were the entrepreneurs Reinhold Himburg from Schricke and Dr. Carl Still from Recklinghausen. Since 1945, the Klutturm has been owned by the municipality. After 1990, the municipality had it renovated so that its various floors could be used for exhibitions, and the observation platform high above could once again be accessed. From there, one has a fantastic view of the Elbe landscape extending far into the Altmark region, the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, and the Harz foothills.

The Klutturm is the landmark of Rogätz. If you have the opportunity to climb up, you have a wonderful view of the Elbe and Ohre, which flow together there, as well as the Elbe meadows.
