    Monasterace Castle
Published in Calabria, Castles, Italy, Reggio Calabria
Monasterace Castle is one of Calabria's most important historical monuments. Situated on a hill above the town of Monasterace, this impressive fortified building represents a piece of the region's ancient history. Built in the 10th century, the castle has undergone numerous alterations over the centuries, becoming a manor house, a prison, and a place of worship.
    History
The history of Monasterace Castle is closely linked to the history of Calabria. Built by the Byzantines in 1000 AD, the castle represented an important defensive point against the Saracen raids that plagued the Ionian coast. Over the centuries, the castle passed from hand to hand until it was purchased by the Ruffo family in the 16th century. The Ruffo family transformed it into a manor house and furnished it with elegant rooms and Italian-style gardens.

      Castello di Monasterace
"The first castle was built under the Byzantines (10th-11th centuries) to provide some security for the first settlement built after the destruction of Caulonia. The center of the village was cleared of farmhouses to create the space needed for construction and to prepare a new defensive system against the Turks. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded, modified, and even rebuilt due to the advent of firearms and the deterioration caused by raiders and terrible earthquakes. The current structure dates back to the 16th century. It is square in shape—the exterior measures about 42 meters—with the base raised eight to fifteen meters above the ground, depending on the difference in elevation. The corners of the castle are reinforced by four parallelepiped towers with a rectangular floor plan. Inside there is a large courtyard, 18.60 meters long and 16.50 meters wide, in the center of which stands a deep and wide cistern used to collect rainwater through a system of pipes. It has no battlements due to the damage it suffered in the earthquakes of 1659 and 1783 and was not rebuilt as it was deemed unusable for the new defense systems. Under Aragonese domination, it was the domain of the Princes of Caracciolo from 1347 to 1464, when Luigi Caracciolo ceded it to the Conclubet of Arena, lords of Santa Caterina (in 1486 the Conclubet family was implicated in the Baronial Conspiracy against King Ferrante of Aragon and was dispossessed of its lands), who in 1478, at the behest of Duke Alfonso of Calabria, ceded it to Guglielmo Monaco of Cosentino, son of King Ferrante. In 1486, it was purchased by the Neapolitan patrician Silvestro Galeota, whose descendants held it with the title of Princes of Monasterace until 1654. It then passed to the Master of Campo, Don Carlo della Gatta, who assumed the title of Prince (c. 1647), to Prince Giacomo Pignatelli, Duke of Bellosguardo (c. 1680), and from 1705 to Marquis Domenico Perrelli di Tomacelli and his descendants with the title of Duke, to the Barons Abenante (1750-1806), to the Martuccis, and to Baron Giacomo Oliva (as early as 1844).
