In Messina, a monument to Don Giovanni d'Austria commemorates his role in the Battle of Lepanto. The monument was created by Andrea Calamech in 1572 and depicts Don Giovanni standing with his foot on the head of his defeated opponent. It currently stands in Piazza Catalani, but has been relocated several times following earthquakes and political unrest. In addition, a historical reenactment of the "Spectacular Sbarco di Don Giovanni d'Austria" takes place every August to commemorate the events of 1571.
