In the area of the dunes, as here in Penmarc'h, trough-shaped, stone-lined depressions, so-called "fours à goémon", are found in many places. In earlier times, kelp was collected and dried to "pains de soude". Due to the sodium and iodine compounds in the dried seaweed, the "pains de soude" were raw materials for industry and agriculture.

There are still five seaweed ovens left in Penmarc’h, one of them is on the coast of Saint-Guénolé. Seaweed ovens are trenches dug in the ground which were used to produce “soda loaves”, obtained from the ashes of harvested seaweed, and which were sold in the 16th century to glass factories and then especially in the 19th century, during the second industrial period of these algae, to the industries which exploited the iodine used in the photography industry (silver iodide) and the medical field (iodine tincture disinfecting external wounds)1. Seaweed fishing boomed during the second half of the 19th century, leading to the creation of veritable seaweed fleets. The seaweed ovens died out in the 1950s when the “breads of the sea” were dethroned by Chilean soda and by the chemical manufacture of a much better quality soda.
