Traces of Neolithic hunters were found on the Heuberg (formerly Eichelberg), located directly above the village of Colmberg. A small settlement may have existed there during Celtic times. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the entire upper Altmühl Valley consisted of primeval forest on the hilltops and swamp near the river and streams.

After 720, the Frankish kings took possession of the area and used it as a hunting ground. Charlemagne is also said to have hunted aurochs here, which the place name Auerbach still recalls today.

During the Carolingian era, around the year 770, a small palisaded castle with a wooden tower was built on this 511-meter-high spur of land, 54 meters above the valley floor, to overlook the entire area from the Altmühl spring near Hornau to the narrowest point near Frommetsfelden. The rectangular shape of the inner castle still bears witness to this today.

For nearly 500 years, this fortress and its surrounding lands were an important possession of the Hohenzollern dynasty, which they mortgaged three times due to debts, but always redeemed. From here, their bailiffs oversaw access to the imperial city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, with which the burgraves maintained a highly strained relationship. Thus, in 1407, the castle became the rallying point for all Hohenzollern vassals and their allies in a military conflict with Rothenburg and its mayor, Toppler, that had grown out of a feud. An estimated 10,000 men marched under the command of Burgrave Frederick VI to besiege the imperial city. Rothenburg was ultimately forced to negotiate and demolish five castles it owned. Due to the enormous costs incurred by the war against Rothenburg, Frederick VI moved his main residence to Colmberg Castle. The upkeep costs there were considerably lower than at Cadolzburg Castle or in Nuremberg.
