Only the church tower remains as a reminder of the village of yesteryear.
The neighboring Rosia Poieni copper mine is to blame.
When the decision was made in 1970 to dump chemical waste here, the small village of Geamăna in the Transylvanian region was virtually submerged in poison overnight.
1,000 people lost their homes overnight; approximately 400 families had to be relocated – whether they wanted to or not.
And today? Not only the lake, but also plants and trees are severely contaminated. Only one spot remains in the water to remind us of the once picturesque village of Geamăna: only the church tower still rises above the lake.
However, because the factory continues to discharge wastewater and waste into the lake, the water level continues to rise – until eventually, even the church tower, the last remaining witness to the old village, will disappear without a trace.
