The pitch furnace is one of the medieval production facilities for the extraction of tar and pitch, also one of the common forest trades at the time. Its functional operation is similar to that of a coal kiln.
The end products of a pitch furnace were distillation products of the wood, such as wood vinegar, pine oil, wood tar and light and heavy pitch.
At a temperature of up to approx. 400 degrees Celsius, these products were produced one after the other. The work process took several days. In addition, a high quality charcoal was obtained.
