If you visit the Grote Kerk (Great Church), you'll be captivated by its impressive architecture and rich history. The current church dates from the second half of the nineteenth century and was designed by Amsterdam architect Isaäc Warnsinck and his student Abraham Nicolaas Godefroy. The three-aisled basilica in neoclassical style combines Romanesque and classical features.

A Gothic church, St. Martin's Church, once stood on the site of the current Grote Kerk. It was named after the patron saint of the city of Gorinchem and was consecrated on April 12, 1263. Around 1570, St. Martin's Church was renamed "De Kerk" (The Church) and later "Grote Kerk" (Great Church). During the siege of Gorinchem in the winter of 1813-1814, the church was severely damaged. The French, who were in the city, came under heavy fire from Russians and Prussians from the Merwede River. The church was so badly damaged that services could only be held in good weather. Due to its dilapidated state, the church was closed by order of the city council on August 31, 1844. The building was demolished shortly thereafter.
