This former timber transport route from the Lewitz River, once used to heat Schwerin Castle, has much to offer. The construction of dams in 1830 increased the water depth, causing the surrounding meadows and forests to fall below the water level of the Stör Canal.
In the 1960s, the canal was further deepened by dredging to accommodate even heavier loads. Every year, many barges passed through the Stör Canal, often accompanied by a tugboat and up to four barges. The passenger ship "Bade III" also provided regular passenger service from Banzkow to Schwerin in 1949.
Today, this waterway is particularly popular with recreational boaters and canoeists. In recent years, spacious boat piers have been built on both sides of the bridges in Plate and Banzkow.
The route follows natural paths, the passability of which, especially the sandy paths, depends heavily on the weather and the condition of the section.
