It was one of the earliest castles in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, built around 925 as a border fortress on the Elbe. It subsequently served as a seat and travel palace for the Ascanian margraves. Under Emperor Charles IV, it was expanded into the Margraviate's main residence around 1373. The first Hohenzollern dynasty, Burgrave Frederick of Nuremberg, also resided mostly in Tangermünde after his appointment as Margrave and Elector of Brandenburg in 1415. Thereafter, the castle became the administrative center of the Altmark and the Prignitz. In 1640, Swedish troops burned it down during the Thirty Years' War. In 1699, an administrative building was built in the partially preserved complex.
