According to legend, a wooden cross floated here near Ferres. During floods, it miraculously circled at a certain point in the river. This inexplicable occurrence was interpreted as a sign from God to build a place of worship on the banks. The oldest mention of a small church dates back to the 17th century. The wooden cross, featuring an almost life-size Christ, was initially located in the old chapel and later, after the new building was constructed in 1929, on the eastern exterior wall. To protect it from further exposure to the elements, it was placed in the tower of the parish church of St. Michael in 1960. As a replacement, a sculptor from Morbach made a sandstone cross, which can be seen outside next to the entrance.
