Tielen Castle is probably one of the oldest buildings in the region. There was already a walled watchtower here in 1096. The current castle dates back to the 14th century and was built on the site of a previously fortified and moated farm. The castle and the watermill of Tielen have always been the property of the lords of Tielen. Until they were sold by heirs in the 20th century. The castle was the residence of the lords of Tielen for many years; the first lord of Tielen was Jan van Duffel-Berthout from Grimbergen; he inherited Tielen in 1320 from Hendrik IV Berthout; it was probably his successor, Hendrik van Duffel Berthout, who had the castle built around 1350 and came to live there. Through marriage and succession, the castle and the watermill of Tielen later came into the hands of various noble families. The last lord of Tielen was Filip van der Gracht de Rommerswael who lost his property due to the French Revolution on 7 December 1810. In 1826 the seized goods were returned to the heirs. In 1958 the castle was sold for the first time.

Rebuilt in traditional brick and sandstone style in the 16th-17th century. The coach house was added in 1688. The castle was converted into a summer residence around 1830, accompanied by a general restoration, which caused a large part of the medieval character to be lost, such as the two stepped gables of the actual castle, as well as the cross-windows and the building to the north adjoining this wing with a prison on the ground floor and the chapel above. The main entrance moved from the Hofdreef to the Gierlebaan and was preserved in the current Kasteeldreef. The gatehouse was also partly demolished in the 19th century, so that the guardhouse above the entrance disappeared.

Restored again in the early 1970s by the late Marcel Dams (1925-2016) and Emilienne Verboven (1929-2019) and partly rebuilt in 16th-17th century style, including the partial re-application of cross-windows in the castle wing, the reconstruction of the top floor of the gatehouse and, seen from the street, the building to the right of the castle wing. This is based on old engravings of the castle.
