The history of the bridge is closely linked to that of the place itself. Obervolkach initially developed in the northwest of the Volkachbach. A connection across the stream was not necessary at this early stage. Only with the parish of Obervolkach from the mother church in Volkach and the preservation of its own parish church of St. Nikolaus did the river move into the center of the village. The parish church in the east of the stream was first mentioned in 1435. The two districts were connected by a bridge.

From then on, the bridge formed the center of village life in Obervolkach. A story tells that in the Thirty Years' War between 1631 and 1634, the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf rode over the bridge and is said to have brought the village under his occupation.
