Location: Altmörbitz, Leipzig district/Saxony and Schömbach, Altenburger Land district/Thuringia
    Purpose: Flood protection
    Construction period: 1967 to 1972
Commissioning: 1971 (as a flood retention basin), 1977 (as a dam)
The Schömbach dam is located about 50 kilometers south of Leipzig on the border between Saxony and Thuringia. Because of its importance for flood protection in Saxony, the facility is operated by the Free State of Saxony. The dam is part of a complex flood protection system in the southern area of Leipzig - the Lower Pleiße flood retention system. The dam is of great importance for the overall control of the system. It can absorb around 6.2 million cubic meters of flood water and thus protects the communities along the Wyhra. In the case of a flood that statistically occurs every 100 years, it is possible to reduce the peak discharge from 90 to 10 cubic meters per second.

The fairytale lake at the Schömbach dam is hidden in the forest.
The lake is a former quartz keratophyre quarry filled with water.
Various rare and endangered animal and plant species are native here.
Karl May was inspired by the fairytale lake for his book "Treasure in Silver Lake".
