One of these large, upright stones is the Haina stone (Pierre Haina). ‘Haina’ is said to be a word of Celtic origin and means ‘Stone of the Ancestors’. According to legend, there is a shaft or portal under the stone that leads to the centre of the earth and which the devil also uses.

Once upon a time there was a miller who lived by the river Aisne. One time there was not enough water and the miller saw how the Haina stone suddenly tilted and the devil appeared with a proposal. In desperation, he sold his soul to the devil if he would build a dam in one night. The latter happened and the devil called the miller. But only a dog came running. The devil became furious and in the blink of an eye destroyed the dam that he had been working on all night. To recover, he went to rest on the ‘Devil’s Bed’ (Lit du Diable), a boulder in the shape of a bed with a headrest. The remains of the dam are said to be visible today, northeast of Wéris, at the site of Roche-à-Frêne.

This stone is repainted white by the Wérisiens at every autumnal equinox. It is said to prevent the devil from emerging through the gallery under the stone to torment the area. The devil is said to have an aversion to white, the colour as a symbol of purity and innocence. In the past, phenomena such as finding dead chickens, quarrels and outbreaks of disease were said to be due to a visit from the devil, who had fled back to Hell before sunrise via the shaft under the Haina stone.
