The construction works began after the Christian reconquest and extended for several reigns. Looking to increase the population and its defense, King D. Afonso III began the construction of the new alcazar and its five square towers.

Monsaraz is a small town and the best way to get to know it is on foot, wandering its streets and alleys. It's a real pleasure to stroll through the narrow streets paved with shale, to walk along the narrow streets, to turn corners to discover yet another quaint little house, a door you want to go through, a window from which you want to gaze into the distance.

Like most Portuguese castles, this one is free to visit. The walls are accessible, offering a great view of the town and the surrounding area. Unfortunately, we weren't able to climb the keep. The old bullring is impressive.
