Tips

  • The Harpstedt Watermill is located directly opposite the Amtshaus (municipal building) – originally, a 13th-century moated castle stood here. The mill's history has always been closely linked to the castle's turbulent history. Imminent destruction during the Thirty Years' War was only averted at the last moment. In 1712, the mill was rebuilt from scratch – an inscription on the east side commemorates the construction date. The grain mill at that time had two grinding gears and presumably two waterwheels. In 1882, the waterwheels were replaced by turbines, which were later used to generate electricity. Harpstedt was supplied with electricity from here until the end of World War II. The mill was in operation until 1962. Today, the mill belongs to the Hotel "Zur Wasserburg" and serves as a restaurant and café. However, a non-operational waterwheel still serves as a reminder of the old days.
