One of the rare copper deposits in Bavaria was mined in the Wilhelmine mine, on the outskirts of Sommerkahl in the upper Kahlgrund. Mines containing iron and copper were initially mined, and mining began underground in 1871. However, due to the low copper content of the mined ore, the operation became increasingly unprofitable and finally stopped in 1923. The copper mine Grube Wilhelmine Sommerkahl was founded in 2000 with the aim of making the former mining facilities accessible to visitors. In the meantime, part of the old tunnels have been exposed, illuminated, the slope above the mine entrance secured and an information building constructed. Visitors are given insights into the working methods and working conditions of a historic copper mine. A 8.5 km long, signposted nature trail leads around the Wilhelmine mine. Visitor parking spaces are available.
