"Leap to Freedom": The escape of GDR border policeman Conrad Schumann, August 15, 1961

The 19-year-old border policeman Conrad Schumann is a trained shepherd and comes from Zschochau in Saxony. In the early morning hours of August 12, 1961, his brigade is relocated from Dresden to the Berlin sector border. His salary increases by 30 East German marks as a "danger allowance," totaling 370 East German marks.

On the afternoon of August 15, 1961, he becomes the first border policeman to escape to the West at the corner of Bernauer Strasse and Ruppiner Strasse, daring to leap over the barbed wire entanglement. The photo goes around the world with the message: The GDR's own troops are deserting.
