In the sand pit, deeply weathered diatexites (partially melted gneiss) are exposed under a 2 m thick layer of granite and diorite. The rocks are completely decomposed over the entire exposure height, so that they can be mined like sand. The structural characteristics of the rock, such as the fracture network, are completely preserved. The gneiss replacement testifies to intensive chemical weathering during the Tertiary. Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU).
We start the hike in Volkmannsdorf at the confluence of the Isar and Amper. From here the path leads through the village before winding up to the heights north of Volkmannsdorf. Here we have a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape, which is particularly impressive in clear weather. Today, however, the outlook is gloomy!
