Today's church was built between 1734 and 1749 by the Wessobrunn master builder Joseph Schmutzer. The magnificent frescoes are by Matthäus Günther. The landmark of Mittenwald is the church tower, completed in 1746 and painted with the church patrons Peter and Paul. The parish currently has around 5,900 members.
