The Julianakanaal is being widened and deepened so that larger ships can pass through. In order to be able to dig, the water has to be drained. A dam is being built just south of the bridge over the canal at Berg aan de Maas. From here to the lock in Born, the canal is then drained. But first, the fish have to be removed. They are caught and transferred. Then the section of canal between the dam and the lock can be emptied. By opening the lock at Born slightly, the water flows north. This is done in small steps, so that not too much water flows out at once. Otherwise, bridges and quays downstream could be damaged. Then the digging can begin. Some 120 dumpers and excavators will get to work on this. A road is even being built on the bottom of the canal to remove all the material. After a few months, the digging work and the new dikes are finished. Then the water is pumped up again from behind the lock. When the level is good again, the dam can be demolished and the canal will reopen. According to the planning in April 2025. After that, ships up to 190 meters long, more than 11 meters wide and 3.5 meters deep will also be able to pass through the canal.
