About a km above the main road along the course of the Torrente Toscolano river there are ruins of paper mills, some of which date back to the 16th century. The river ripples quite dynamically into the valley here. You can imagine how powerful it can be if you try to understand the peninsula of Toscolano di Manerba as the alluvial land of this river. The region was heavily fought over by Austria/U and Italy in WW1. It is conceivable that the destruction of the paper mill could date back to this time. However, I have not yet found such a reference. I find the interpretation of the place name of the paper mill Vago particularly amusing: it seems to be derived from Latin and means something like "a place that stands in the north wind". I find the interpretation "a cool, damp place where the sun rarely shines" even more apt. 😃🍀
