The church, whose foundation stone was laid around the year 1200, was first mentioned in a document in 1269. It was extended in the 14th century and also received a vault. The current Gothic hall church made of plastered rubble stone dates from the 15th century. It has a rectangular, recessed choir in the east, to which the sacristy is attached to the south. The wooden bell tower in the west is dated to 1383 according to dendrochronological research. The church bell from 1507 had to be recast in 1855 because it cracked. The nave is covered with a gable roof, as is the choir. There is an extension to the north of the nave that houses the vestibule. The interior of the nave is covered with two bustled groin vaults, the choir with one.

The galleries were built in the 16th century, the pew in the choir was built later. The church also contains a Gothic baptismal font and a Baroque baptismal angel. The altarpiece was made in 1603 and the pulpit, on whose parapet the four evangelists are depicted, was originally made for the church in Kerstlingerode in 1586. The predella shows a relief depiction of the Last Supper. The altarpiece was added in the 19th century. The altar cross and the mensa are from the 20th century.

The first organ was built in 1880 by Henrich Vieth. It was replaced in 2009 by a work by Feopentow Orgelbau with eleven registers, a manual and a pedal.
