The Old Castle was built in the 15th century by Margrave Albrecht Achilles. This first construction phase was completed in 1489, and the castle was gradually expanded and rebuilt.

Anna of Saxony, the wife of Albrecht Achilles, used the castle as a widow's residence. Even after that, it served as a residence for members of the Margrave family until 1626. After the completion of the New Castle in 1626, the respective state governors used it as a residence.

After the end of the Margrave era, the Old Castle first housed the regional court and the revenue office, and later a municipal hospital. Today, the Margrave Museum and the Aischgrund Carp Museum as well as the Children's Play Worlds are housed on the castle grounds.
