Kanał Piastowski, translated as Piast Canal,[1] has been the name of the canal on the island of Usedom since 1945, which was built between 1875 and 1880 as the Kaiserfahrt, also known as the Kaseburger Kanal,[2][3] which connects the Swine (Polish: Świna) south of the port city of Swinemünde (Świnoujście) with the Szczecin Lagoon and thus with the Oder. Today the canal is in the Polish part of the island.

The northern part of the canal near the city was called the Mellin-Fahrt and bypassed the silting Heide-Fahrt. It cut through the old island of "Großer Mellin" and then reached the old Swine. The actual "Kaiserfahrt" then began on the island of "Kleiner Mellin".

The twelve-kilometer-long shipping route with a water depth of about ten meters bypasses the difficult-to-navigate eastern old course of the Swine. This waterway was often silted up and had to be constantly dredged. Since then, seagoing vessels have been able to travel the canal between the Baltic Sea and Stettin (Szczecin) with less risk, which led to the rise of the port of Stettin and the decline of the port of Świnoujście. On the other hand, the railway line from Berlin to Świnoujście, which was put into operation in 1876, over the bridge at Karnin (interrupted since 1945) contributed to the rise of Świnoujście and its neighboring towns as seaside resorts.

The construction of the Kaiserfahrt separated an eastern part of the island of Usedom around the village of Kaseburg and became the island between the Kaiserfahrt and the old Swine. The island is now connected to the island of Wollin via a new bridge from 2010.
