After a power station and dam were built north of Evje, the water level in Byglandsfjord was raised by approx. 5 meters and after this there was no longer any need for locks. They are still in use when the steamer DS "Bjoren" goes on its summer route. The locks were renewed in July 2006.
National highway 9 crosses the Storstraumen, and there was a rest area by the locks. This was closed by the National Roads Administration in 2013 citing that it was supposed to be dangerous[1], which caused strong reactions locally[2]. Later, a new rest area was built on the west side, a little north of the lock. It was opened on 17 June 2017.[3] An old stone arch bridge from 1909 over the stream is preserved next to a newer road bridge.
