The station opened on October 1, 1854.
In the station directory from 1860, the stop is still referred to as Retzbach and is listed under the Expedition category. The station was temporarily closed in 1923 due to rationalization measures. In 1955, the station was given its current name, Retzbach-Zellingen. Finally, in 1988, the ticket office was closed. Since November 16, 2008, the signal box has been controlled from Karlstadt. From June 20, 2010, the ESTW (Electronic Signal Box) Würzburg Hbf took over this task.
