Josef Fischer, the best German cyclist of all time (*20.01.1865 +03.03.1953)
He was born in Atzlern, not far from Neukirchen b. Hl. Blut, and grew up in Grabitz, a district of Furth im Wald. Between 1892 and 1915 he was the world's best cyclist.
For example, he won the Vienna-Berlin long-distance cycling race in 1893, Milan-Munich in 1894, and was the first winner of the race through the "Hell of the North", Paris-Roubaix, in 1886. It was not until 2015 that a German, John Degenkolb, won again. Fischer needed 9 hours 17 minutes for the 280 kilometers. In 1900 he won the Bordeaux-Paris race. He was the only German participant in the first Tour de France in 1903. From 1897 onwards he was also a successful track cyclist. In August 1894 he defeated a western rider with his horse in an exhibition race and later he covered 258.5 km in a seven-hour competition with a rider, while the latter only managed 209 km despite changing horses several times.
During his active time, Fischer earned his living from the prize money from his race victories. This made him probably the first professional cyclist in our country.
