The carpenter De Vries, who lives in IJlst, made skates for various companies in Friesland. His company building on the Uilenburg in IJlst dates from 1880. In 1922 he founded the Frisia ice skating factory with his son Willem de Vries. The company produced about 10,000 skates per year. The production of skates continued well after the Second World War. From 1960, the management of the company was in the hands of grandson Eeltje de Vries. In 1991, the entire production was taken over by Finkenburgh in Koudum, which indicated at the time of takeover that it would produce 40,000 children's skates per year.
