Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary

The church building dates back to an early Gothic choir tower church, which was first mentioned in documents in 1422 as the Chapel of Our Lady. Due to the poor condition of the church, the citizens of Berching asked Prince-Bishop Johann Anton II of Freyberg in Eichstätt for a new building in 1750. He then commissioned the new court building director Maurizio Pedetti, who did not envisage a new building, but instead found an elegant conversion solution taking the structural constraints into account. The church was decorated in the Rococo style until around 1785.
The interior is dominated by the Rococo high altar, which harmonizes perfectly with the side altars in terms of design and color. Above the gilded tabernacle with exposure niche is the large altarpiece with a painting by the Eichstätt painter Willibald Wunderer from 1779. It shows Mary's Assumption into Heaven. The high altarpiece is flanked by larger-than-life figures of the diocese's patrons Willibald (left) and Walburga (right).
The two side altars are executed in a very similar style to the high altar. The altarpieces were also created by Willibald Wunderer. The main painting on the northern (left) side altar depicts the Last Supper, with side figures being Saint John the Baptist and Moses. The southern (right) side altar shows the Fourteen Holy Helpers in the main picture, flanked by figures of Mary's parents, Saint Anne and Joachim.
In the two side chapels, there are further, smaller side altars on the east side with paintings by Johann Chrysostomus Winck from Eichstätt. In the northern side chapel, the altarpiece depicts Saints Joseph, Anthony of Padua and Francis Xavier, and in the southern side chapel, Christ on the Mount of Olives.
The people's altar and the ambo were created in 2011, for the 250th anniversary of the church's consecration, by the Eichstätt sculptor Günter Lang. The stucco on the walls and ceiling, which is in the old Bavarian plaited style, is the work of the artist Johann Michael Berg.
The large ceiling fresco by Johann Michael Baader from 1758 is framed by particularly rich rocaille stucco. It shows the heavenly coronation of Mary, representatives of the four continents known at the time - Europe, Africa, Asia and America - paying homage to the Mother of God, as does King David playing the harp.
