In 1806 an imperial decree under Napoleon established the canalization of the Saar in order to ship the coal from the Saarland to France. The locks from Saargemünd to Saarbrücken were built between 1806 and 1813.
On April 4, 1861, a treaty between Prussia and France decided to build the Saar-Kohlen Canal.

The listed barrage in Güdingen is located at Saar km 93,000 and is the last lock of the original expansion of 1863 after the Saar expansion into a major shipping route was completed. The Güdingen barrage consists of a lock and a two-field weir separated from the lock.
