he St. Peter's Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Antwerp town of Berlaar, located at Markt 42.
    History
In 1227 the tithing rights were given to the Abbey of Rozendaal in Walem. An early Gothic church building was erected around 1230, the tower of which is still present. The church was replaced by a new one around 1353 and was probably later destroyed by fire. A new church was built with a late Gothic choir from the mid-17th century and an 18th-century nave and transept.
In 1873-1876 a new, neo-Romanesque church was built according to a design by Leonard Blomme.
On May 14, 1940, the tower was blown up by the Belgian army. In 1940-1943 the tower was rebuilt using as much material as possible from the destroyed tower. A reinforced concrete skeleton was used as a support.
    Building
It is a three-aisled oriented cross basilica with a pre-built tower. This tower is built in Ledische stone and has four sections under a tent roof. The church building is made of bricks and has a semi-circular enclosed choir.
    Interior
There is a painting from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century: Martyrdom of Saint Peter, by Pieter Thys. Furthermore, the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine by Theodoor Boeyermans (3rd quarter of the 17th century).
The church has a polychromed statue: Ecce Homo (around 1700) and an 18th-century crucifix.
Most of the church furniture is neo-Gothic from the 2nd half of the 19th century. The sermon pillar is from the 1st half of the 18th century. The organ dates from 1954-1955 and was built by the Jos Stevens company.
