Pilgrim Statue at Alto de San Roque

The monument to the pilgrim of Alto de San Roque (altitude of 1270 m), the work of the Galician sculptor José María Acuña, is a statue placed in 1993 and located in Pedrafita do Cebreiro (Lugo). It is one of the most emblematic points of the French Way, the route that runs through the peninsula from east to west, starting in Roncesvalles and ending in Santiago de Compostela.

Up in the mountains at 1270 meters altitude, on the section between La Faba and Triacastela, on the Alto de San Roque, a huge pilgrim statue surprises you. This pilgrim here, holding his staff firmly in one hand and protecting his hat from being blown away with the wind with the other, is a real giant. Even at 1.80 meters, this statue only reaches up to the waist.

The statue of a pilgrim goes well with the Galician mountains. As inhospitable as the weather can be here, the pilgrim keeps his hat. The figure is clearly visible on the roadside and is almost the only thing you can see in the snow. There are really people here !!! 😉
