Aken is a planned town built by Flemish settlers, which arose next to the castle and its settlement (Gloworp, Lorf). The roads from Köthen (Anhalt) to Zerbst and the road from Dessau to Calbe (Saale), which intersect here, are considered the development axes of this planned city. While municipal institutions such as the Aken town hall can be traced back to the 13th century, and the city was first named in 1271, a city wall was not mentioned until 1335. A renovation took place between 1994 and 1996.[5] The former gate tower is a listed building and is recorded in the list of monuments with the number 094 70747.[6]
