      Location and name
The gate tower is located in the northwest of the old town of Aken (Elbe) at the western end of Burgstrasse on the corner of Philippsburg Street. The Calber Landstrasse begins to the west of the city gate and leads to Calbe (Saale). It is not known with certainty whether the street and gate were named after Gloworp Castle, which was located a few hundred meters further west on the street, or after the archbishop's castle (first mentioned in 1392[1]) that existed here.

        History and shape
Aken is a planned town built by Flemish settlers, which arose next to the castle and its settlement (Gloworp, Lorf). The roads from Köthen (Anhalt) to Zerbst and the road from Dessau to Calbe (Saale), which intersect here, are considered the development axes of this planned city. While municipal institutions such as the Aken town hall can be traced back to the 13th century, and the city was first named in 1271, a city wall was not mentioned until 1335. This is explained by the fact that previously - as documented - a palisade wall protected the city. The city had four city gates, three of which have been preserved.[2]

With a height of 15 m and a base area of 16 m², the castle gate tower is a relatively small brick tower with a pyramid helmet.[3] On the ground floor there is a round arched passage, on the upper floor the windows to the west and east are designed as slits.[4] The tower is said to have been first mentioned in 1288, and its current appearance dates back to around 1500. A renovation took place between 1994 and 1996.[5] The former gate tower is a listed building and is recorded in the list of monuments with the number 094 70747.[6]
