The gate tower is located in the south of the old town of Aken (Elbe) on Schützenplatz near the corner of Köthener Straße and Komturstraße. South of the square is Köthener Chaussee.

Since Aken emerged in the High Middle Ages as a planned town at the intersection of the roads from Köthen (Anhalt) to Zerbst and from Dessau to Calbe (Saale), it also had a town gate at each entrance. The city was initially protected by a palisade wall, but later a stone city wall was built, which was first mentioned in 1335. Today three of the four gate towers remain.[1]

The Köthen gate tower is the most representative in design and is also the tallest gate tower in the city. It was built in 1551, its predecessor can be traced back to 1288. The existing building was probably expanded. The 21 meter high tower with a floor area of 25 m²[2] was built from quarry stone, in contrast to the Burgtorturm and the Dessauer Torturm, which are made of brick. It is plastered in the upper part and divided by corner blocks. It also has a Renaissance tail gable and, since 1900, a tower clock on the north and south sides. In 1996 the tower was restored. A brick gate remains next to the tower.[3][4]

A stone monument protection plaque by Robert Propf was attached to the side facing the city. The former gate tower is a listed building and is recorded in the list of monuments with the number 094 70769.[5]
