The Bridge over the Drina is the title of a historical novel by Ivo Andrić published in 1945, which refers to the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad, an important transport route over the Drina River as an interface of events. The historical and author-invented events of Bosnia's history spanning four centuries take place here: from its construction by the Ottomans in the middle of the 16th century through the Austro-Hungarian occupation to its partial destruction in the First World War. Using many individual examples, Andrić shows the fate of the residents and the relationships with each other, especially the Serbs and Bosnian Muslims.
