The power plant's generator is the oldest in continuous operation in New Zealand and one of the oldest in the world. It was built by the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, between 1899 and 1901.

In 1935 the power station was installed to supply tourist accommodation in Dawson Falls in Mt. Egmont National Park. The Dawson Falls Tourist Lodge opened in 1896, but because of its remoteness, it was not connected to electricity suppliers.

The power plant holds a Pelton wheel, which is driven with water from the Kapuni River through a 635 m long pressure line (pipeline). The Pelton wheel drives a direct current generator, a regulator, a flywheel and a small alternator with a possible output of 74 kW (100 PS).
