The Sonnendeicher lock was first mentioned in a document in 1764. The name did not refer to the location of the lock, but to the area to be drained and thus to the name of the "Schleusencommüne". This lock drains the area of Groß Sonnendeich and largely also via the "Kleine Au".
the area south of Klein Sonnendeich and the northeastern part of Neuendeich-Schlickburg.
From the simple, wooden folding sluices that had been around since the Middle Ages, a brick drainage lock was developed from clinker bricks, the free opening of which was usually large enough for a lock barge to pass through. Over time, it became necessary again and again to renew the lock body and lower it in order to ensure the desired lowering of the water level:
In 1961 the Sonnendeicher lock was replaced by the construction of the new “Seestermühe pumping station” on the same site.
At the same time, the receiving water, the former “Kleine Au”, was straightened and deepened. (Source: Schild)

On the Seesteraudeich, on the border with the estate and the municipality of Seestermühe, was the "Sonndieker Schleuse" (1764) or "Kleine Schleuse". This lock drained the area of Groß Sonnendeich (a district of the municipality of Seester) and Seestermühe.
In 1961, construction began on the second pumping station on the Seesteraudeich at the same location as the Sonnendeicher Schleuse, which was to replace it. This pumping station, which took several years to build, had a discharge capacity of 5.6 cubic meters per second and created the conditions for large-scale drainage in the area of the Seestermühe-Neuendeich sluice association. At the same time, the Wettern, the former "Kleine Au" from the Lohkuhle (Groß Sonnendeich/Schlickburg) to this new pumping station on the Audeich, was straightened and deepened, so that the section from the Seesteraudeich to the bridge on the "Im Felde" road today looks more like a canal than a drainage ditch. This work was completed in the summer of 1963.
