The Sé de Angra do Heroísmo is a striking Catholic cathedral, whose construction began in 1570. It is characterized by two bell towers and a rich interior with a carved cedar ceiling, 17th century tiles, and a large organ. The building suffered significant damage during the 1980 earthquake and 1983 fire, but has been restored.
