The colors of light play a crucial role in the reactions of different species. For example, red or green light influences the melatonin levels of perch and carp fish, while coastal fish such as sole, zebrafish and sea bass react more strongly to blue light. These differences are likely influenced by the natural water constituents and colors of the waters in which the fish are found. Rodents such as the native wood mouse also show preferences for certain light colors. The wood mouse is more tolerant of long-wave red light compared to shorter-wave green light. Interestingly, mouse-eared and long-eared bats behave similarly under red light as they do in natural darkness. However, they avoid white and green light. These findings illustrate how complex and diverse the effects of light on wildlife are and why it is important to take ecological considerations into account when planning lighting.
