    Lichtenberg Castle (1570) + Bollwerk Tower (1503) - Lichtberg/Odw. 🚴‍♂️

Weddings, family celebrations, concerts, exhibitions. Local and cosmopolitan. Environmental education center of the UNESCO Geopark Bergstrasse-Odenwald. The Renaissance castle, built by Landgrave Georg I of Darmstadt between 1570 and 1581, is today the cultural center of the community.

Before construction of Lichtenberg Castle began in 1570, the castle of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen stood here as early as the 12th century. Landgrave Georg I commissioned the master builder Jacob Kesselhuth to build the Renaissance castle. The Landgravial family enjoyed staying in Lichtenberg because of the "healthy air." The castle became a base for hunting and, for a time, also a widow's residence for the Landgravines. After the Thirty Years' War, however, the castle was rarely used and over the centuries it gradually fell into disrepair.

Today, the castle is owned by the State of Hesse. The Landscape Museum, founded in 1951, has been expanded several times and now has an exhibition area of approximately 1,120 m², as well as an 85 m² lecture and activity room. However, it is currently closed and can only be visited by appointment. Not far from Lichtenberg Castle, about 400 m west, stands the Bollwerk, a late medieval battery tower that later served to protect the castle. Built in 1503, the tower has a diameter of approximately 19 meters and is 15 meters high. 🚴‍♂️
