The castle, built under the Arab Umayyads, was built at the mouth of the Fuengirola River. Its ruins are located south of the river, 38 metres above sea level. The castle of Sohail was built on the orders of the eighth Emir and first Caliph of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman III, in 956 to reinforce the coastal defences on the foundations of an older fortress of Phoenician or Roman origin. Sohail was conquered by the Christian troops of the Kingdom of Castile and León during the Reconquista on 7 August 1487, twelve days before the capture of the provincial capital of Málaga. The castle was badly damaged during the fighting.

Today, the restored ramparts of Sohail Castle regularly host cultural events such as festivals, artistic performances and musical events, including the Noches del Castillo ("Castle Nights") with pop and rock concerts and the Fuengirola City Festival.
