Once you get away from the Sand Lake Campground this is one of the lonelier hikes in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, taking you through a mix of meadows and forests and past several lakes, before finally ending at Brooklyn Lake Campground. If in doubt at any trail intersections, always stick to the main, well-marked route.

If you're looking for a long backpacking route or want to set up a point-to-point hike with a car shuttle, the Sheep Lake Trail also intersects the Gap Lakes Trail.
