The reservoir was named after the Sylvenstein, a rocky ridge that borders a natural narrow area to the east in the upper Isar valley. The western boundary is the rocky Hennenköpfl. The Sylvensteinsee is also an excursion destination and recreational area. Sunken in the lake lies the former village of Fall, which was demolished before the flooding and rebuilt a few dozen meters higher on the road to Vorderriß.
