The “Ghost Forest” is a popular excursion destination for nature lovers. It was declared a nature reserve in 1943. With a width of around 100 meters and a length of around 1,300 meters, it is part of the Nienhäger Holz forest area. Locals say the forest is located “where the wind cuts the grass,” as the grasses, bent by the sea wind, look as if they are all the same length. The oaks, beeches, hornbeams and ash trees are 90 to 170 years old. They are relatively far apart. Little to no shrubbery grows between them - plenty of room for light and shadow. For decades, the salty, moist Baltic Sea wind and the many storms have shaped the appearance of the forest. The crowns and trunks that appear to flee from the wind are also called “wind refugees”.
