The Gail rises in a moorland area on the Kartitscher Sattel in East Tyrol, just 150 m from the source of the Gailbach, which flows in the opposite direction. It flows through the Tyrolean Gailtal, the Lesachtal and the Carinthian Gailtal. It joins the Gössering near Hermagor and the Gailitz near Arnoldstein. Southeast of Villach, it flows into the Drau near Maria Gail. The river is 122.2 km long and its catchment area is 1,414 km².
