After much back and forth, 1,250 years after the monastery was founded, the bronze monument, which cost 110,000 euros and is almost four meters high and weighs one ton, was realized.
Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, founded 18 monasteries in the 8th century, the first being Mattsee in 760 AD. He expanded his empire to the east and Christianized the pagans. At the height of his power, he ruled over an area that included today's Upper Austria, Salzburg, North and South Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria. He married into the Italian royal family and the Pope baptized his son. Under his aegis, the mighty Salzburg Cathedral, a symbol of strength, was consecrated.
Ultimately, Tassilo would fall victim to his own cousin – Frankish King Charlemagne. In a trial in 788 he was accused of dereliction of duty and alliance with the enemy. The death penalty imposed was “mercifully” commuted to monastic death.

Tassilo III (* around 741; † around 796) was the last Bavarian duke from the Agilolfing family. He was a cousin of Charlemagne.
