Tips

  • The mound is located on a high promontory, on the right bank of Musė, at its confluence with the Kaimena stream. People remember the legend that in ancient times there were red brick tunnels from the river, that "three bachas of money" were buried there.
We are talking about the finds of human bones, crosses, and bricks, so it is assumed that a brick chapel could have stood here in modern times. The origin of the name "Pikuolis kalnas" is not entirely clear, the name is probably related to Pikuolis, the god of the underworld. Archaeologists and historians studied the mound more than forty years ago. There is an opinion that many centuries ago, in order to defend themselves from enemies and protect their property, the inhabitants built a wooden castle at the confluence of two small rivers. A place well protected by nature itself was chosen. The castle was protected on three sides by the water of streams and steep slopes, about 20 meters high. The castle was cut off from the land side by digging a ditch twelve meters wide and two meters deep. On the surface of the embankment you can still find pieces of hardened clay from the wooden castle set on fire during the attack.
